With a very careful (read: single-frame) jump while constantly holding left, it is possible to jump directly up to the chimney in Darunia to get the upward thrust technique. Here are the key frames for the above trick:
This is the first frame where the town is visible after transitioning from the screen with the Magic Lady. On the previous screen the Jump spell was prepared for casting.
This is the frame when Select is first pressed, to cast Jump.
This is the frame when A is first pressed, to jump.
